Block paving is a product that our team has installed forever, it's what we started with, as it is the foundation of all driveway surfacing.

The product is still reasonably popular to this day, seeing as it comes at more affordable prices than resin bound, and still looks better than tarmac in a lot of people's eyes.

Block paving is affordable, classily designed, and can last for a long time.

Natural Beauty

Block paving has been around since 500 BC; therefore, it instantly gives a classic and stylish design to your driveway, and often comes at pretty affordable prices. The colour and pattern options are vast when talking about block paviours.

Durability

With proper maintenance, including re-sanding and weed removal, block paving can last a very long time, up to 50 years often. Although the maintenance can be a drawback, if taken seriously, it will seriously increase the durability of this product.

Affordability

Block paving is one of the most, if not the most, affordable option. It all comes down to the size and requirements of the project. The materials are very reasonable on price, and labour costs are cheaper compared to resin experts, bringing the total cost down.

EXCAVATION AND PREPARATION

We take the preparation stage very seriously because it is crucial. A long-lasting result requires the right base and sub-base. This is also the most costly step in the process, which is why some businesses don't finish it to the highest standards. To make sure everything is done correctly and is long-lasting, we take our time on this phase.

BLOCK PAVIOURS

We can begin installing the block paviours as soon as the site is ready. This entails laying a full bedding layer with washed, sharp sand conforming BS 7533-3 at 50mm below the desired finish level, screeding the layer to a uniform level and to the correct falls, and laying 50mm thick block pavers. Afterwards, we apply kiln-dried silica sand to all joints until full, and compact the entire surface with a vibrating plate and protective mat if required.

DRYING TIME

Block paving is fine after 48 hours for vehicular traffic. Foot traffic is possible after just 3–4 hours.

"We contacted Tradesmart after a different company made a huge mess of our driveway. Michael from Tradesmart visited the same day to view the job and offered different options to rectify. We decided to block pave the full area and are extremely pleased with the finish. Michael was great throughout giving a quick turnaround, brilliant finish and a good price. The lads working on the job were friendly, knowledgeable and respectful. We would recommend their services to anyone and will be booking in next year to have work done to the backyard. Thanks guys."

FAQs - Block Paving Driveways

  • What is a block paving driveway?

Block paving driveways are created from concrete pavers (in general), they are delivered in pallets and laid by hand, on top of sharp sand and Certified MOT Type 1.

  • What's the difference between block paving and other driveways?

Block paving is laid one block at a time, whereas most other driveways are uniform, smooth surfaces. This means they look very classic and stylish while also being more affordable, but they are also heavier on maintenance.

  • How is a block paving driveway installed?

We install block paving driveways to the following specifications:

    1. Excavation

Mark out the driveway at agreed dimensions, levels, and falls

Excavate 200-250mm below the final finish level

Dispose of all waste from site via grab lorry direct to recycling plant

    2. Preparation

To supply and install full certified MOT Type 1 crushed stone sub base at 150mm depth

To compact layers no deeper than 75mm by wackerplate

To shape sub-base correctly according to falls and water run-off

To supply and install all edging as required

To supply and install full bedding layer with washed, sharp sand conforming to BS 7533-3 at 30-50mm uncompacted depth

To screed to bedding layer to uniform level following correct falls

    3. Finish

To supply and install full 50mm thick concrete block pavers in desired colour and pattern

To lay blocks hand-tight onto bedding layers with staggered joints where required

To cut block using block splitter or disc cutter for corners and edges

To supply and apply kiln-dried silica sand brushed into all joints until full

To compact the surface with vibrating plate and protective mat if required

  • How long does a block paving driveway last?

Block paving driveways can last up to 50 years if regular maintenance is completed. Otherwise, they can start to have dips and a lot of weed growth after 5-10 years.
